Researchers at NIVEA laboratories have made important discoveries about the role Folic Acid plays in human skin. They have studied evidence from nutritional science that Folic Acid is involved in DNA synthesis.

Folic Acid is a B vitamin which the human body cannot produce. Therefore, we must get it from the food we eat. The name derives from the Latin word folium, which means “leaf”. Foods rich in Folic Acid are spinach, lettuce, tomatoes and potatoes, some varieties of cabbage and fruit as well as products made from whole grain flour.

Dr. Stefan Gallinat, a molecular biologist and researcher at Beiersdorf:
“The crucial role Folic Acid plays in cells was established many years ago. Studies have demonstrated its relevance for DNA synthesis and cell turnover. Skin cells constantly divide and this process, the so-called skin regeneration, is impaired as we get older. So based on this observation we speculated that Folic Acid would have many beneficial effects on ageing skin. We were able to show that skin treated with DNAge Day Cream has a higher level of Folic Acid and that the cells in these areas of the skin actually regenerate faster because the cellular DNA is better protected and able to recover faster from external stress.”
