The Art of Shampooing

Who knew there was a perfect way to shampoo your hair? Well, Unilever seems to think there is. If you’re willing to shampoo your hair with the help of a timer, a thermometer, and a special cup that measures in milliliters, Unilever’s Dove brand says they have discovered the optimum technique for washing your hair. Scientists at Unilever’s Port Sunlight research center gathered 500 volunteers for a six-month test for various wetting, lathering, and rinsing techniques. When all their data were gathered, they concluded that the optimal shampooing method was as follows (Source: Happi, October 2003, page 26):

1. Use running water with a temperature of 37.5°C (99.5°F).
2. If you have short hair, use 6 milliliters (ml) of shampoo; medium hair, 8 ml; long hair, 10 ml.
3. The lathering process should last 28 seconds, with a total of 20 rubs (massaging the scalp), while rinsing should last at least 22 seconds, and be followed by a second rinse. (If that’s the case, why not just say that rinsing should last 44 seconds?)
4. Conditioner should always be used. (This is not true as a blanket statement for all hair types, but it does help sell more conditioner.)
5. Post-shower, hair should be patted dry with a towel, then allowed to air-dry.
